ROUND 5 WRAP

Round 5 delivered some interesting results for our club – with one round (two for the 1sts) before Christmas, 2 out of the 4 senior sides are in the top 4 and could be in by Christmas with some positive results.

Senior Division First Eleven

SBOCCC made 182 with captain Craig Osborne and VC Chris Spinella both making half centuries. Unfortunately Greenvale went past us 9 wickets down for a narrow loss. Craig Osborne took 4/33 with Tristan Kassis and Romain Grenville taking 2 each. The firsts are now 2 wins / 2 losses with a very important next two weekends with 1 x 2 day game and a 1 x one day this Sunday versus Keilor.

Senior Seconds.
SBOCCC chased down 151 runs made by Greenvale with James Davey carrying his bat on the way to 138 NOT OUT – well done James. Good support from Luke Marinelli with the bat whilst Chris Davis look near career best figures last week with 6 / 42.

Senior Thirds.
SBOCCC chased down Seddons’ 9/183 finishing at 3 / 375 with Jason Bourke 178 Justin Cluer making 71, Trav Carrick 60 and Max Jaggard 54* - well done to this team who are improving each week and defeating Seddon who were previously on top of the ladder. Great bowling and fielding display last week.

Under 16
SBOCCC defeated St Francis 160 v 131with Max Jaggard and Matthew Catterall taking two wickets each.

Under 12A
SBOCCC were defeated by West Coburg 9/95 v 7/131

Under 12E
SBOCCC were defeated by Pascoe Vale 4/84 v 2/186 with Tyler Willis taking 2/9

The milo program will run on the same nights as our under 10 games so Friday nights will be a busy place.

Well done to Brendan and Duncan.

ALEX TURNER SNARES 7 WICKETS

Second XI opening bowler Alex Turner produced one significant highlight in what was a fairly dark and miserable round for the Snowdogs, taking an incredible 7/43 off 28 overs in the round 3 match against Airport West/St.Christophers.

Alex broke into the 2nd XI last season after showing promise in the lower XI's over the past few seasons and has this season cemented himself a spot as one of the lead bowlers in the side. Opening the day with ball in hand he bowled 21 overs straight as the Snowdogs tried to defend their 1st innings score of 120. The incredible workman-like spell of bowling included 7 maidens as he claimed the wicket of 4 of the top 5 Airport West batsmen.

A fantastic effort by a young player with plenty of promise, who will hopefully have higher honours bestowed upon him in the not to distant future.

Well done Turner!

SNOWDOGS FINISH ROUND THREE 0-4

Oval one is back after a successful renovation of the wicket table, one positive after a poor round 3 for the Snowdogs with all four teams failing to bring home the chocolates.

The First XI playing at home for the 2nd match in a row failed to chase down 287 for victory after they at one stage had the visiting Airport West side 6/90. Romain Grenville (78), Craig Osborne(26), Tristan Kassis(26), Jordan Mills(33) and Chris Spinella(44) all got a start in the Snowdogs chase, but it wasn't enough as they fell 27 runs short.

The Sinclair Johansen led 2nd XI travelled around the corner to Airport West for their local grudge match and were only able to get 120runs on the board on day one with Matt Bergin(42) and Ivan Jurcic(26) the only batsmen to get a start. The hosts were able to chase down the small target with little trouble, although they did lose 3/4 in the middle of the innings. Special mention must go to Alex Turner for his 7/43 off 28 overs - A fantastic effort.

The Third XI had a match to forget against Taylors Lakes at Albion being bowled out for 81 on day one. The hosts then amassed 9/201dec before giving the Snowdogs a major scare taking 5/36 off 34 overs.

The 4th XI hosted the RMIT first team in a one day match at St.Bernards on the Hilbert Oval at St.Bernards and batting first were bowled out for 83 which was chased down with ease by RMIT on their way to 7/157 at stumps.

A disappointing round of cricket for the Snowdogs, the challenge now is to bounce back from four losses. Some key in's for the 1st XI should see stronger XI's filter

4TH XI HAT-TRICK FOR VETERAN GREG COOK

Coming back after a solid opening spell Greg Cook continued where he left off bowling to the middle order of Greenvale.
Greg’s first wicket was to a ball pitched just short of a length outside off stump, the ball cut off the seam and caught the inside of the bat and was played onto the stumps.
The new batsman has come in and with confidence faced up a metre out of his crease, seeing this, Cookie has thrown the ball wide and with the ball cleanly taken by the wicket keeper Blake Manassa, the batsman did not have enough time to get back to his crease before he was out stumped.
With the arrival of the next batsman it was business as usual for Cookie, he went back to his mark, thought about the ball he was going to bowl, and with a ball pitched perfectly on off stump Cookie swung the ball back into the batsman and with enough movement through the air clean bowled the batsman middle stump.

ROUND 2; WEEK ONE WRAP-UP

A solid start for the St.Bernards Old Collegians Cricket Club in their first day of play for the 2012/13 season. Opening the season at home the First XI amassed 285, the highest score by the first XI in over 5 seasons. New coach Romain Grenville debuted with 96, while Captain Craig Osborne made 75 against last years Senior South premiers - Old Mentone.
The 2nd XI will be chasing 198 for victory after they had the hosts 5/60 at tea, but dropped 6 catches to allow Mentone to post a competitive score.
The Third XI collapsed to be all out for 115 at Greenvale only to close the day taking 7 wickets for 57 and hold the upper hand heading into week 2.
The 4th XI had a final over victory against Greenvale in their one day match at St.Bernards on Sunday. Veteran opening bowler Greg Cook snared himself a hat-trick, while his good mate Phil Conlan brought up the winning runs in the final over, ending on 48*.

St Bernard's Hilbert Oval - Couch Grass Roll Out

With the generous funding from the St Bernard's College, our Hilbert Oval has had a major renovation.

The wicket table has been laser levelled, raised and had roll out instant Santa Anna couch applied to 5 of the 6 wickets.

The 6th wicket has been seeded with normal RYE grass for use whilst the couch grass beds into the merry creek clay soil.

Resulting from this will be a significantly improved cricket playing wicket for both the College teams and the Old Collegians.

Previously many of the College games have had to be rescheduled onto the Murphy oval or off site as the quality of the wickets was below standard. This renovation will enable our College teams to play on above standard wickets - safer in terms of reliable bounce and competitive with more harder wearing grass. The Old Collegians club has been criticised for the last 2 years for sub standard wickets.

The better, more consistent and harder wearing grass will be a much improved benefit through the football season whilst the raising and flattening of the wicket deck should reduce the amount of water held due to the poor natural drainage.

Our club aims to play round 2 on the Hilbert Oval with the couch wickets being used from Round 3 or 4.

SBOCCC DONATE TO GRASS ROOTS CRICKET IN FIJI

Cricket4Kids would very much like to thank the SBOCCC for their contribution of cricket equipment to our 2012/2013 Drive. The equipment will be sent to Fiji in December and distributed to villages where grassroots cricket is loved and played, yet equipment is scarce.

2012 in 2012 Campaign

We are also continuing our campaign to double our intake of equipment. We are well on the way to achieving our target of collecting and shipping 2012 kilograms this year.
The equipment you have donated has also contributed 20 kilograms toward our target of 2012 kilograms in 2012.
As you play out the season remember to discuss Cricket4Kids within your club. We will happily accept any equipment of reasonable quality that you no longer require. We are particularly keen to 'tap' into the equipment hiding out at the homes of players within your club. If you could circulate this email to your player list, we are very confident we will access far more equipment to give a second home.
Again, thank you St Bernard’s for your efforts. They will be making a difference to children in Fiji. When you have a moment, jump on our Cricket4Kids Facebook page and 'like' us!
For further information please see our website: www.cricket4kids.org, or email me directly at luke@cricket4kids.org.

VALE HARRY OVERMAN

St Bernard’s Old Collegians Cricket club is mourning the tragic loss of Harry Overman who passed away this week.
Harry played Junior and Senior Cricket with our Club since under 12’s before dedicating himself to developing into the best footballer that he could be going on to win the SBOCFC U19 and competition wide B&F in 2010.
He played Junior Cricket in the morning and Senior Cricket in the afternoon then was often seen practicing in the nets after play alongside his brother Tom and other close Snowdog mates.
He had a breakout season in 2008/09 when as a 15 yr old, after playing in the juniors on Saturday made a 100 in the Senior Competition on the Sunday followed by a score of 87 a few weeks later. He no doubt would have gone on to represent our club in the first XI but unfortunately for us, Football was Harry’s main love.
Harry’s energy, smile, dedication and big heart will be sadly missed around the St Bernard’s community.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mick, Kerry, Tom, Will and Sarah and the extended Overman family who have been a large part of the St Bernard’s Old Collegians club since formation.

SBOCCC Bowling Coach - Dean Solomon

It is with great pleasure that we welcome back to the club in a formal capacity Dean Solomon in the role of bowling coach.

We have a number of exciting bowling prospects within both the Junior and Senior teams that will benefit from the technical knowledge and passion for the Club that Dean will pass onto them.

AGM & SEASON LAUNCH A SUCCESS

The 2012/13 campaign is officially underway, with the AGM and season launch being held Monday night at the St.Bernards pavilion. The night was a good chance for many to meet new coach Romain Grenville as well as the selection of the new committee for the upcoming season. Anthony Jordan, as planned, stepped down from his role as President after 5 years to allow more time with him family and give greater attention to his business ventures.

Replacing Anthony will be 200 game legend Jason Bourke, who showed on Monday night he will give a new fresh approach to the job with a clear vision of where he see's the club heading in the years to come under his reign - following on from the brilliant position Anthony has left the club in.

Simon Cave and Michael Thom have filled the vacant Vice-Presidency roles while Tom Isaacs and Terry Davis will again fill their roles as Secretary and Treasurer, as will Duncan Hefter as Junior Co-Ordinator. Returning to the committee are Kevin O'Connell, Luke Davis, Jordan Mills, Brendan Davey, Tristan Kassis, Sinclair Johansen.

The committee would like to welcome two new comers in Nick Serrano and Patrick O'Connell. It is fantastic to see people willing to give up their time and show their commitment to the club as we strive to become a power house in Senior Division.
